Achilles Tendinopathy: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Pain around the Achilles tendon is common in walkers, runners and active adults. Achilles tendinopathy usually develops when the tendon is repeatedly exposed to more load than it can comfortably tolerate.
Common symptoms
Symptoms often include pain or stiffness around the back of the ankle, particularly first thing in the morning or at the start of activity. The tendon may feel tender or thickened, and symptoms can increase after running, hills or prolonged walking.
Why does it happen?
A sudden increase in training, reduced recovery, changes in footwear, calf weakness or stiffness, and repeated high-load activity can all contribute.
What can help?
Management often includes adjusting activity, progressive calf strengthening, footwear advice and a gradual return to higher-load activity. Complete rest is rarely the long-term answer.
When should it be assessed?
Assessment is worthwhile if pain persists for several weeks, is worsening, or if there was a sudden snap, marked swelling or difficulty pushing off the foot.
