Flat feet are common and are not automatically a problem. Many people have low arches with no pain at all.

Common symptoms

Symptoms, when present, may include arch fatigue, heel pain, ankle discomfort or aching after prolonged standing and walking.

Why does it happen?

Foot shape is influenced by genetics, joint structure, muscle and tendon function, age and previous injury.

What can help?

Treatment is only usually needed when there are symptoms. Options may include footwear advice, strengthening, activity changes and orthoses where appropriate.

When should it be assessed?

Assessment is useful if flat feet are painful, one foot is changing shape, or there is increasing weakness around the inside of the ankle.

How Pentland Podiatry can help

Pentland Podiatry can assess whether your foot posture is actually contributing to your symptoms rather than treating the appearance of the foot alone.

If this problem is affecting your walking, work, exercise or day-to-day comfort, contact Pentland Podiatry in Penicuik to arrange an assessment.
