Ankle sprains are very common and often occur when the foot rolls inwards, stretching the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.

Common symptoms

Pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty walking are common in the early stages. Some people later experience stiffness, weakness or a sense that the ankle is unstable.

Why does it happen?

They usually happen during sport, uneven-ground walking or a sudden change of direction.

What can help?

Early movement within comfort, gradual strengthening, balance work and a progressive return to activity are usually more helpful than prolonged immobilisation in uncomplicated cases.

When should it be assessed?

Medical assessment is appropriate if weight-bearing is very difficult, there is marked bony tenderness, severe swelling, deformity or ongoing instability.
