A bunion is a change in the position of the big toe joint where the big toe gradually moves towards the smaller toes and the joint becomes more prominent.

Common symptoms

Symptoms can include rubbing from footwear, redness, joint pain, stiffness and discomfort under the forefoot.

Why does it happen?

Genetics, joint structure, footwear pressure and the way the foot loads can all play a role.

What can help?

Conservative care can include wider footwear, padding, symptom relief, activity changes and sometimes orthoses. These measures can reduce symptoms but do not straighten the joint.

When should it be assessed?

Assessment is worthwhile if pain is persistent, footwear is becoming difficult or the deformity is progressing.

How Pentland Podiatry can help

Pentland Podiatry can assess the joint, footwear and walking mechanics and discuss practical options for reducing symptoms.

If this problem is affecting your walking, work, exercise or day-to-day comfort, contact Pentland Podiatry in Penicuik to arrange an assessment.
